Let’s Talk About Birth
Birth is not something that is talked about much. According to the UN, about 360,000 babies are born a day. That’s a lot of women having the experience of birth but not sharing it.
The idea of having a baby is often met with hesitation and a whole lot of uncertainty, due to increased fear around their ability to cope, financial pressures or relationship stressors. There’s a range of different emotional responses, all of which are normal. Women have a lot to think about leading up to the birth of a baby, not to mention coping with the physical changes occurring in their bodies, as hormones go wild!
The expected glow to the skin and gorgeous bump seen in many pregnancy pictures are far from the reality many women experience with their day-to-day symptoms. No one seems to be commenting on the most blush-worthy pregnancy issues…itchy skin or extra gas. It all seems uncertain and overwhelming at times, but uncertainty is not the end of the story.
Uncertainty is present when we make so many of our life decisions. Not being able to control all the outcomes and details should not stop us from new experiences…applying for our dream job, meeting new people, exploring new possibilities. The important thing in the decision-making process is to understand what is driving you to make a particular decision.
Could the driver be fear of the unknown, anxiety over not being able to cope, financial instability or the lack of resources? To be guided by variables means we can often miss one of the most important guiding lights we possess… our values. Your values can often be the anchor that keeps you steady, despite difficult circumstances threatening to overwhelm you.
Zoe’s Place values the strength of togetherness. We come alongside women during their pregnancy, as well as during the first few months of motherhood. Our Zoe’s Place Mentoring Mums program matches a new mum with one of our volunteers.
This is a unique opportunity to gain friendship, life skills, pregnancy care knowledge and parenting skills through regular meetings over a cuppa. Our volunteers are all women who have been mothers themselves and have received training on how to best support a mentee enrolled in the program. Mentors are passionate about supporting other women during this busy and challenging season of life. Participants meet regularly so that no woman needs to feel alone during any stage of the pregnancy journey leading up to birth.
